Expression of Love

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mothers’ sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple who he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman here is your son” and to the disciple, “Here is your Mother” from that time on, this disciple took her into his home.  John 19:25-27

Jesus put his mothers’ needs before his own, which is the ultimate expression of Love.  Jesus didn’t focus on his suffering as he hung on the cross but for the suffering of his mother and his friend.  Jesus was not being disrespectful when he called his mother Women.  He knew that calling her Mother at that time would deepen her pain.  Jesus knew his mother and John were grieving and likely not thinking of themselves but only the suffering he was going through and knowing they were losing him.  Jesus interceded then just as he does today for us and provided his mother and John with what they needed.  Jesus wanted to make sure his mother would be taken care of once he was no longer on earth.  He wanted to ensure she had a home and someone to care for her and someone she could care for.  It is likely Joseph had been dead for a while and Jesus had been taking care of his mother, so he gave the honor of taking care of his mother to John.  In all that he had gone through and was about to go through, Jesus took care of his mother and friend first.

Putting others before yourself is a true expression of Love.

The world would be a much better place if we practiced putting others ahead of ourselves.
